Sandra A. Grutzius (nee Furtek), 73, of Shererville, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Sandy is survived by her children: Dion Grutzius, Jason (Jen) Grutzius, Carmen (Doug) Griffith, daughter-in-law Nirmala Grutzius, proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren, and her two fur babies, Kelly and Squirt. She is also survived by her siblings: Rose Wegrzyn, Gene (Naomi) Furtek, Joe Furtek, her Sister and Brother in Laws from the Grutzius Family, and many nieces and nephews. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Gertrude Furtek and her son Brian (Nirmala) Grutzius. Sandy remains greatly loved by many family and friends and she will be missed.
Sandy was raised in Calumet City and graduated from T.F. North High School where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, Leonard Grutzius. They shared four children and she spent the early years of her marriage at home raising them while learning various baking, crafting and sewing techniques. She spent her lifetime sharing her talents by making fun costumes, dresses, quilts, keepsakes, blankets, stained glass and baked goods. She found deep joy in being creative and loved to give gifts, especially when she had made them herself. Sandy went on to work many years as a pharmacy technician and later a unit secretary at Palos Hospital, making many friends over the years.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all those that supported and assisted Sandy during her illness the last few years. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in support of animal rescues and rehabilitation.
