George William Carroll Schreiner

On January 7, 2026, George William Carroll Schreiner entered the presence of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.
George was born on July 6, 1929, in Alexandria, Virginia, to George Ernest Frederick Schreiner and Olga Louise (Brandt) Schreiner. In 1937, he and his brother Donald Schreiner were placed in the Augsburg Lutheran Home for Orphans and Aged in Baltimore, Maryland, at the ages of eight and six years old respectively. He remained in the orphanage until he graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in June of 1947.
George began working for Capital Airlines in Washington, D.C., in September of 1947. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in October of 1950. He was sent to Korea in 1952 with the First Marine Air Wing, and was assigned duty on the aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea. He was stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, and earned seven medals for his military service.
Later, he served four years as President of the VMF311 Reunion Group. After becoming a member of the Korean War Veterans Association of Chicago, he participated in the “Tell America” Program, which visited and educated local high schools on the Korean War. He later joined the Freeport, Illinois chapter in 2007.
Upon discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, George married the love of his life, Joan Hollingsworth, on December 6, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee. After returning home to Alexandria, Virginia, he resumed working for Capital Airlines, which later merged with United Airlines in 1961. In 1962, he was transferred to San Francisco International Airport and moved to Newark, California. In 1967, he was transferred to Chicago O’Hare International Airport as the Lines Stores Manager of Aircraft and Automotive Parts. He moved to Hanover Park, Illinois, in 1968; to Schaumburg, Illinois, in 1977, and to Davis, Illinois, in 2005. He remained employed by United Airlines for 39 years and retired from them in March of 1987. However, he continued to work for another ten years for Nexus Office Equipment and later part time for a local florist.
While living in California, he was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. After moving to
Illinois, George became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Day School of Roselle, Illinois, where he served as Chairman of the Board for the grade school and as a deacon and longtime choir member for the church. When he moved to Schaumburg, Illinois, he became a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church and served as a pastoral assistant; choir and board member. In 2006, he completely retired and moved to Lake Summerset in Davis, Illinois, and became a member of Faith Community Church. After his wife (Joan) of 57 years was called home to be with the Lord in 2011, he moved to Roscoe, Illinois, and became a member of Hope Evangelical Free Church.
George loved to sing and joined the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA) in 1960 with the Fairfax Jubilaires of Fairfax, Virginia. While living in San Francisco, he was a member of the Frank Thorne chapter. After moving to Illinois, he joined the Arlingtones Chapter, based in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
As an Arlingtone, he earned three bronze medals in International competition from 1973-1975. Duringthis time, he also sang bass as part of the Kingsmen Quartet. He became the Chapter Secretary and later the Illinois District Secretary for the Barbershop Harmony Society. In 1982, he joined the New Tradition Chorus based in Northbrook, Illinois, as a charter member. They achieved an unprecedented 14 consecutive medals in international competition. Beginning in 1988 and through the years, they earned five bronze medals, followed by eight consecutive second place silver medals. In 2001, they finally
achieved the first-place champion gold medal. After moving to Davis, Illinois, in 2006, he joined the Rockford Barbershoppers chorus.
George also loved to dance. He and his wife square danced with the Bucks & Does Square Dance Club in Elk Grove, Illinois for many years, and later they joined the Lake Summerset Squares in Davis, Illinois.
George loved to socialize and had a wonderful sense of humor. He regularly shared a joke or humorous story with many he met while exiting a restaurant or with medical personnel before and after his doctor visits. He was incredibly kind hearted to everyone and always expressed his appreciation to others for their
presence and help in his life.
George was predeceased by his wife, Joan Schreiner; his father, George E.F. Schreiner; his mother, Olga Kapyla; his brother, Donald Schreiner; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Robert Steiner; and his nephews, Denis Steiner & William Steiner of Kenton, Ohio.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Gail Luker of Crown Point, Indiana, and son, Bradley Scott (Val) Schreiner of Valparaiso, Indiana; his four grandchildren, Tyler (Alora) Schreiner of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Cassidy Koester (Jeremy) of Martin, Tennessee, Cory Schreiner of Pooler, Georgia; and Zachary Luker of LaPorte, Indiana, along with his two great granddaughters, Eridani Schreiner and Lyra Schreiner. He is also survived by his half-sister, Sonja Mosier of Brookings, Oregon; his sister-in-law, Jennifer Schreiner
of Akron, Ohio; his four nephews: Craig Steiner (Julie) of Kenton, Ohio; Kamm Schreiner and Kevin Schreiner of Stephens City, Virginia; Chip (Ruthie) Basel of Georgetown, Delaware; his niece, Kathleen (John) Gorka of May, Texas, along with numerous cousins.
