Dawn J. Gruber-Embry

Dawn J. Gruber-Embry, age 57, of Merrillville, formerly of Hessville, IN, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022.

Dawn is survived by her husband, Steve Embry; children: Brandy Al-Sallal, Allen Gruber and Morgan Gruber; grandchildren: Tatyana Garcia, Allen Gruber, Jr. and Neaveh Gruber; brothers: Frank Pena and James Jacobs; and sisters: Tammy Shirks, Rachel Shirks and Deborah Shirks.

Dawn was preceded in death by her parents: Edward Mattussa and Belvadear Hunter.

Dawn started her waitressing career at the Golden Nugget in Chicago and then continued serving at other establishments in the NWI area. Dawn’s interests and hobbies were not those of her own, but those of her grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren more than anyone could imagine. Her hobbies became whatever the “kiddos” wanted to do that day – coloring, cooking a scrumptious meal, riding bikes, going for a walk, or just playing a board game. Dawn loved spending as much time as she could with the little ones and took every opportunity to be with them. She was a devoted mother and “Nonie” and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Private arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Dawn’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
