David Mark Schaffner, age 68, of Gary, Indiana. Beloved brother of Anne Louise Schaffner, uncle of Ashley Martin and Stephen Martin III and great-uncle of Owen Wooley. Preceded in death by his deeply loved and cherished parents, Donald George Schaffner and Helen Osborne Schaffner. David was born in Seattle, Washington on August 17, 1956 and was adopted when he was 8 days old. David grew up traveling the country with his sister, their mom and their dad who was a Scout Executive and Camp Director with the Boy Scouts of America.
David’s life was filled with acts of service, gestures of goodwill, and diligent work. This began with selling seeds door-to-door at age 7, delivering newspapers at age 11, and riverboat piloting at age 18, later muscling his way through masonry labor with his best friend Larry J. Sabor, Jr. and enjoying a decades long career as an engine builder, a Certified Master Machinist, and Certified Master Mechanic. With strong convictions from which he never wavered, David will be forever admired for his dedication to the adoption and protection of unhoused cats, his deep care and concern for animals of every species, his pure joy in ballroom dancing, his passion for political discourse, and his unwavering righteousness. David will be forever missed.
A Memorial Service for David will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Boy Scouts of America or the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana would be appreciated.
