Donald L. Pickering, 63, of LaPorte, IN passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer. Don was known by many as “Pickle,” but he was most importantly known as Dad and Grandpa. Born on May 31, 1963, Don was a loyal, funny, patriotic, and hardworking husband and father. His most notable quality was his ability to always make everyone smile.
Don spent almost 30 years working at US Steel. He was also a proud veteran who served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, riding his Harley, camping, and making people laugh. If he picked on you, he loved you. The laughter and smiles he brought to everyone around him are what his loved ones will miss the most.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sebrena Pickering, whom he married on July 7, 1984, sharing nearly 42 wonderful years together. He was a proud dad to Racheal Smith, Amber Pickering (Nick Lawrence), and Christopher Pickering (Taylor Frye). However, he would say his most important title was Grandpa to Erick Tanses, Cayden Smith, and Landon Pickering-Lawrence. He played the role of family patriarch so well that he even gained bonus children and grandchildren: Mandy, Myles, and Cash Hawley.
Don is also survived by his mother, Jeanette Pickering; his brother, Chuck Pickering; his sisters, Paula Gualandi and Sandy Hennrich; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Pickering; his brothers, Randy and Jerry Pickering; and his sister, Cindy Pickering.
Although he is gone far too soon, his jokes, his smile, and the joy he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Don did not want a traditional funeral, but rather a celebration of his life. His family invites you to join in celebrating him on July 18th at 3:00 p.m. at his residence. Details to follow.
